Surfers Paradise and Redlands Inaugural Charity Shield
Surfers Paradise and Redlands club's joined together to play for the inaugural Charity Shield that was established this year to raise funds for the victims of the Queensland's Floods.
A Total of $2,292.00 was raised by the club and the spectators the day and there were other individual donations made that took the total over $3700.00 for that we say a huge thank you to all.
The Curtain raiser game between the Major B team's saw Redlands get off to a handy lead before the Surfers Paradise boys came back with the bat. It was fantastic game played in great spirits, with the Redlands team winning the game 6-3.
The major A sides started like two teams who haven't played for a while but as the rust came off there was some fantastic baseball. Tyler Chappell's catch at right field a highlight. Both sides gave their pitchers a good hitout before the season recommences in full cry and the Surfers team ran out winners 11-3. Best for Surfers was Miles Wesener who chases down everything in the outfield as well as swinging the bat well. Best for Redlands was.Tim Shaw with a fine batting performance.
Club coaches Peter Yates ( Surfers ) and Peter Hartas (Redlands) agreed that the game was a success and the games were played in a competitive environment with both teams benefiting from the work-out.
Both club Presidents, Tony McPhail ( Surfers) and Graig Johnson, (Redlands) have agreed that the two clubs will play a Charity game each year given the success of this event in 2011.
Thank you to the committee, volunteers, players from both clubs, scorers and umpires and spectators for their contribution to this very successful day.
